Declare and Prayer

Curled up on the couch with a good book and a cup of tea, dusk settles on a perfect Sunday evening. As I turn the page a shrill chirp breaks the harmony.

A lone cricket starts singing it’s evening song – in the corner of my house!

I try and ignore the disturbance, but the continual clatter is unnerving. Looking around, I find a pencil and throw it in the direction of the noise. A few peaceful moments pass, and I settle back down, but not for long. The insect is unfazed by my meager attempt. I try and dismiss him (only male crickets chirp, and only when there is stillness), but like most annoyances; the harder I try and ignore it, the more deafening it gets.

Now, the war is on. In order to pinpoint the cricket, I have to use his instincts against him. Crickets, unlike grasshoppers, are nocturnal. They call out to a mate when they feel all danger is gone. So, I have to try and sneak up on him. Each time I move, he will stop chirping, at least until he feels safe again. With spare change in hand I try and inch closer, intending to pummel him with pennies. Confident I found his hideout, I throw the coins in his direction. I silence him - for tonight - but he’ll be back. The cricket has more patience than I.

Do you sometimes feel that way about negative thoughts? Whether about yourself or someone else? Just when you relax and get comfortable, here come the voices: should of, could of, can’t believe she did…

Ignoring, or worse yet, rehearsing these songs are real life stealers. Instead of doing something productive or making you happy, there is an enemy who wants to sit in the corner and disrupt your soul. Of the “devil” the Bible says that he is a thief (John 10:10).

How many times has your joy been stolen by thinking negatively? How many hours have you wasted with unforgiveness or offense? How many relationships have been hurt or just gone by the wayside? The verse in John goes on to say that the thief isn’t happy just stealing, he also wants to kill and to destroy! And we just sit there. Or we get up and throw some spare change at our problem.

It’s time to do more. It’s time to peel back the curtain – as Priscilla Shirer says in the video below – and get ready for the battle. Get our armor on and pray.

One of the ways I have changed my tactic lately is to DECLARE the word of God. Of course, I’ve learned to speak God’s word and to stand firm. But the crickets of offense and doubt are waiting to ambush you and me. The only offensive weapon we have is God’s word, and we need to say it with authority.

According to Webster’s online dictionary, the verb 'declare' means to:

1. a: to make known formally, officially, or explicitly

b: to make known as a determination

2. obsolete: to make clear

3. to make evident

4. to state emphatically

The Word of God is clear on this topic: “Greater is he who is in you then he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4. Let’s turn the tide on the enemy and LOVE one another! Let’s declare that divisions and dissension will not be entertained by us. Let’s consider one another better than ourselves and take back what the locusts have eaten.

I pray you’ll take a moment to watch this video and to find someone to pray with, to confess with, and to bind up all this negative energy that is trying to swallow humanity whole.

"Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven;

and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.

Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them.”

Matthew 18: 18-20
